Why Most Industry + Title Targeting Produces Low Replies
Industry-plus-title is the default B2B list-building pattern. It is fast and cheap, but it describes a population, not a list. The gap between population and list is where reply-rate leakage happens.
Why it fails
Large lists force broadcast messaging. Industry and title are noisy fields with provider-level variance and data decay. Neither carries timing.
Title ambiguity
Title is a label. The same title at different company sizes maps to dramatically different responsibilities. Use role, not title.
What to add
Role, pain, and timing on top of industry-plus-title. Usually shrinks the list 70 to 90 percent and lifts reply rate 2 to 5x.
When it works
As the outer universe filter in a nested strategy, for broad-market offers with truly universal pain, or for early-stage ICP discovery at low intensity.
